Privacy policy
The short version: your notes are yours. They live on your Mac, Notel doesn’t read them, and we don’t sell your data or track what you write.
1. Notel
Notel is built to be private by default. It’s a Mac notes app, and the whole point is that your notes stay with you.
This policy explains what Notel, run by MacProTips Apps, does and doesn’t collect when you use the Notel app or visit getnotel.app.
2. What Notel doesn’t collect
Notel does not collect, transmit, sell, or share:
- The content of your notes
- Note titles, folders, attachments, or embedded files
- Analytics, telemetry, or behavior tracking
- Advertising IDs
- Your location, contacts, or data from other apps
- Anything for AI training or AI features.
There are no ads in Notel, and no ad trackers.
3. Your notes stay on your Mac
Everything you create in Notel is stored locally on your Mac. That includes your notes, folders, attachments, recordings, themes, settings, and preferences.
4. iCloud sync (Coming soon)
Notel can use iCloud sync if you turn it on. If you use iCloud, your data syncs through Apple’s iCloud system using the Apple Account on your device.
You can turn iCloud sync off. Notel does not run its own note-syncing server, and we don’t have access to your notes through iCloud.
Apple’s own privacy policy applies to iCloud.
5. Local Apple features
Some Notel features use Apple system services on your Mac:
- iCloud sync (Coming soon), if you turn it on
- Spotlight indexing, so notes can appear in macOS search
- Notifications, for reminders
- Vision OCR, to read text from images
- Speech transcription, for voice memos and dictation
- Keychain, for your access code and locked-note keys.
Spotlight indexing can be turned off. Locked notes are indexed by title only, not by their locked body text.
Reminder notifications may show a note title or reminder preview. Locked notes use a generic notification instead.
OCR and speech transcription are handled through Apple’s on-device frameworks. Speech models may need to be downloaded by macOS.
6. Link previews
If you paste or create a link preview, Notel may contact that website from your Mac to fetch the page title or icon.
That request goes directly from your Mac to the website, not through a Notel server.
7. Purchases and licenses
Notel can be bought through Stripe or the Mac App Store.
If you buy through Stripe, Stripe handles the payment. We don’t see or store your full card details. We may receive your email address, order ID, and license status, plus your access code stored as a one-way hash. We use these to confirm your purchase, help you if you lose your access, and manage the 3-device license limit. Your access code is never emailed to you: it is shown once on the page checkout returns you to.
For license activation, Notel sends your access code and a device identifier from your Mac to the license server. This is only used to activate Notel and enforce the 3-device license limit.
If you buy through the Mac App Store, Apple handles the purchase.
8. Crash reports and update checks
Notel does not use analytics or behavior tracking.
If Notel crashes, macOS may create crash diagnostics. Notel may keep a small recent crash summary locally on your Mac so it can help with a feedback message. We only receive that information if you choose to send it to support.
If update checks are turned on, Notel may check whether a new version is available. This may use Sparkle or Apple’s update systems.
9. Website and cookies
The Notel website does not use ad tracking or analytics scripts.
There may be a Discord widget on the site. If you interact with it, Discord may receive information under its own privacy policy.
The website or download host may keep basic server logs for security and reliability.
10. License and data requests
You can email us if you want to recover a license, reset an activation, or ask what purchase or license information is connected to your email address.
Some purchase records may need to be kept for taxes, fraud prevention, payment disputes, or legal reasons.
11. Children and students
If a child needs to buy Notel or contact support, a parent, guardian, teacher, or authorized adult should help where required.
